Buying crypto / PRACTICAL GUIDE

Buying crypto through a Malta-based provider

CryptoGov Research Desk · Sources reviewed 1 November 2026

01 / LOCAL CONTEXT

Read the provider’s current status

The MFSA’s crypto framework covers service providers and several issuer categories under Malta’s implementation of MiCA. Start with the legal company in your account agreement and the service you want to use. A token issuer and an exchange operator have different roles, even if the same group promotes both.

Use the MFSA Financial Services Register for the entity’s record and cross-check the relevant EU information. Match the company to your contract and customer location. Do not treat an older VFA-era announcement or a Malta address as the entire permission analysis for a current account.

02 / WORKING CHECKLIST

Understand what you are buying

Write down whether you receive an on-chain asset, a platform balance or another contractual product. Ask how the asset is held and how a withdrawal works. A platform interface can make these arrangements look similar while leaving the customer with different practical rights and dependencies.

Compare the full cost from euro deposit to final custody, including spread, fees and withdrawal charges. Verify the receiving network and minimum withdrawal amount before purchase. If the plan depends on self-custody, make sure the platform allows the intended asset to leave on the supported network.

03 / WORKING CHECKLIST

Use a controlled first transaction

Check the payment beneficiary and required reference, secure the account, and make a small first purchase or withdrawal where practical. Confirm the result independently before increasing the amount. Ignore unsolicited instructions to pay an extra verification charge or disclose a recovery phrase.

Save the agreement, funding confirmation, execution receipt and transaction hash in one file. Record fees and the reason for the purchase so the history remains understandable later. These records help distinguish a personal investment from other activity when preparing a banking explanation or seeking tax advice.

Sources & scope

Official sources support the jurisdiction context. The working checklists are CryptoGov’s editorial preparation suggestions, not an exhaustive application or filing requirement. Confirm the rules and your circumstances before acting.
