Read the status accurately
FCA registration under the money-laundering rules is not an endorsement of an investment. Check the provider’s exact entity and the status relevant to its service. Direct crypto investment generally does not bring the same complaint or compensation protections as many regulated financial products, so read the account’s protection claims carefully.
Write down whether you are buying an asset for withdrawal, holding a platform balance or entering another product. These are different customer relationships. Ask who owes you the asset, whether withdrawals are supported and what happens when account access is suspended. Resolve those questions before comparing headline trading fees.
Examine the route from promotion to purchase
UK-facing crypto promotions are subject to rules separate from a firm’s operational registration. Treat the advertisement as an invitation to investigate, not proof of regulatory approval. Save the offer you saw and compare it with the terms shown during onboarding, particularly any difference involving yield, bonuses, restrictions or costs.
Plan the whole sterling-to-asset route. Check the bank payment method, currency conversion, spread, trading charge and withdrawal fee. Confirm the chain supported by both platform and destination wallet. A low advertised purchase cost can conceal an expensive conversion or a withdrawal route that does not suit your intended use.
Make the first purchase reproducible
Use strong authentication and a verified domain. If withdrawing to self-custody, confirm the address on a trusted device and check any required tag. A small first transaction can test the mechanics where fees allow; retain its confirmation rather than relying on a balance briefly displayed on screen.
Keep the sterling value, asset quantity, fees and transaction date with the exchange export. These records will matter if you later exchange the asset or move between providers. Decide your maximum exposure in advance and do not let an onboarding incentive determine the amount of money you place at risk.
Sources & scope
Official sources support the jurisdiction context. The working checklists are CryptoGov’s editorial preparation suggestions, not an exhaustive application or filing requirement. Confirm the rules and your circumstances before acting.
