Checking a Malta-based crypto exchange

01 / LOCAL CONTEXT

Search the MFSA record

The MFSA Financial Services Register is the public record of firms licensed and regulated by the authority. Search the company named in the customer agreement and inspect its authorisation and service details. Record the date and retain the result with the terms offered to you.

If the register is unavailable or a search fails, treat the check as incomplete. Do not infer approval or wrongdoing from a technical error. Retry through the official route and use the applicable EU register as an additional reference, particularly when the service is offered across borders.

02 / WORKING CHECKLIST

Resolve group-company differences

Compare the registered entity, trading brand, website, payment beneficiary and custody provider. A group may legitimately use different entities, but the allocation of obligations should be clear. Ask which company owes you delivery of assets and which company handles complaints or fiat payments.

Read each optional product separately. A familiar exchange brand does not establish that lending, staking or investment-style features use the same entity or permission. Save the specific terms for the service you intend to activate, rather than relying on the platform’s general compliance page.

03 / WORKING CHECKLIST

Keep a repeatable check

Create a short register-to-contract comparison and mark discrepancies. Verify contact details independently before responding to a message claiming to come from support. A clone can copy a genuine licence number and logo while using unrelated payment instructions or a misleading domain.

Recheck the record when a provider changes your contracting entity or introduces materially different services. Retain warnings or notices relevant to the firm, while remembering that no warning is not the same as approval. Permission checks address legal status; custody risk, market risk and operational security still need separate attention.

Sources & scope

Official sources support the jurisdiction context. The working checklists are CryptoGov’s editorial preparation suggestions, not an exhaustive application or filing requirement. Confirm the rules and your circumstances before acting.
