Check the entity serving your location
Begin with your state of residence and the legal company offering the account. Federal MSB registration and state requirements address different questions. The FBI warns that inclusion in the FinCEN MSB search is not a government endorsement or certification of legitimacy. Treat it as one check, not a complete approval signal.
Write down the exact product you intend to use and ask whether it is available to residents of your state. Spot purchases, custody, derivatives and lending are not interchangeable services. Read the customer agreement for the entity handling each function before relying on a nationwide marketing page or an app-store listing.
Understand custody and the dollar balance
FDIC insurance covers eligible bank deposits under its rules; crypto assets are not covered. Ask where any dollar balance is held and what conditions govern it. Do not assume that a platform’s relationship with an insured bank insures your tokens or protects against the platform’s own failure.
Compare deposit method, trading spread, fees and withdrawal conditions together. If your plan includes a wallet transfer, verify the asset’s supported network and any address tag. Read whether newly deposited funds are subject to a withdrawal hold, so the timing of the purchase and the timing of self-custody are both understood.
Create a testable purchase record
Use strong authentication and a verified account route. Make a small initial transaction when practical and check the resulting asset, fees and withdrawal mechanics. Save the order and payment confirmations. Never provide a recovery phrase to someone claiming that a transfer requires regulatory or technical verification.
Keep the acquisition date, units and dollar value with your records from the start. Record your own wallet transfers separately from sales. This makes later provider changes and tax reconciliation easier, especially when an asset moves through multiple accounts before it is eventually exchanged or spent.
Sources & scope
Official sources support the jurisdiction context. The working checklists are CryptoGov’s editorial preparation suggestions, not an exhaustive application or filing requirement. Confirm the rules and your circumstances before acting.
