Understand the Swiss provider’s role
Determine whether the service is exchange, custody, payment transfer or investment management. FINMA’s FinTech guidance treats activities and asset-handling arrangements as central to the regulatory analysis. Ask whether you receive an on-chain asset, a contractual claim against a provider or exposure through another financial product.
Check the exact legal entity and its regulatory capacity. Membership of an anti-money-laundering self-regulatory organisation is different from FINMA authorisation. Understand the distinction before treating a provider’s compliance statement as a licence for every service.
Build the transaction plan
Choose the asset, spending limit and custody arrangement before opening an account. Record the fiat deposit method, trading fee, spread, withdrawal charge and supported withdrawal network. Compare the total cost of receiving the asset in your intended wallet, rather than the advertised trading fee alone.
Complete the provider check linked below. Read the customer agreement for the entity serving your residence and confirm whether the exact service is available to you. A licence does not guarantee an asset’s price, uninterrupted withdrawals or recovery after a transaction mistake.
Make a small first transfer
Enable strong account authentication and verify the receiving address on a trusted device. Confirm the asset and network at both ends, including any required memo or destination tag. Send a small test amount where fees make that practical, and verify receipt before increasing the amount.
Save the order confirmation, fees, transaction hash and wallet addresses. Keep recovery phrases offline and private. An exchange support agent or supposed regulator should never need your wallet recovery phrase.
Sources & scope
Official sources support the jurisdiction context. The working checklists are CryptoGov’s editorial preparation suggestions, not an exhaustive application or filing requirement. Confirm the rules and your circumstances before acting.
