Start with the licensed operator
The SFC publishes separate lists for licensed virtual asset trading platforms and applicants. An application, including a deemed-to-be-licensed status, is not a formal SFC licence. Start from the licensed list, then match the operator to the agreement you are being asked to accept.
Write down the asset you intend to buy, your residence, account type and intended custody arrangement. Ask the operator whether that combination is supported. A platform can offer different products to different customers; a brand name and a successful registration screen are insufficient evidence of product eligibility.
Trace the Hong Kong funding route
SFC account-opening guidance describes several identity-verification approaches, with conditions attached to each. Ask the platform which process applies to your account and which bank accounts it accepts. Avoid interpreting a deposit threshold from one onboarding method as a universal trading minimum or a requirement to invest that amount.
Compare the complete route from bank balance to asset ownership. Record currency-conversion costs, deposit timing, trading spread, withdrawal charges and minimum quantities. If the plan includes self-custody, confirm the supported blockchain before buying; otherwise a cheap trade can leave you with an expensive or unavailable withdrawal.
Preserve a first-transaction record
Use an independently verified website or app and strong account authentication. Check a receiving address on a trusted device and confirm whether the network needs a memo or destination tag. Where practical, test the withdrawal with a small amount and verify receipt before increasing the transfer.
Save the dated agreement, funding receipt, trade confirmation and transaction hash in one folder. Note who controls the private keys at each stage. This record makes a later question about fees, provenance or missing funds easier to investigate, without relying on a chat transcript or a changing dashboard.
Sources & scope
Official sources support the jurisdiction context. The working checklists are CryptoGovβs editorial preparation suggestions, not an exhaustive application or filing requirement. Confirm the rules and your circumstances before acting.
