Tax records / PRACTICAL GUIDE

Preparing a Malta crypto tax evidence file

CryptoGov Research Desk · Sources reviewed 1 November 2026

01 / LOCAL CONTEXT

Start with the asset and activity

Malta’s tax administration publishes DLT income-tax guidelines issued on 1 November 2018. The document concerns income-tax treatment and expressly does not determine treatment under other laws. Use it as a starting point for questions, while confirming the current application to the arrangement you actually hold.

Retain the token’s contractual rights and the purpose for which you acquired it. Separate personal holdings, trading operations, compensation, business receipts and issuance proceeds. A regulatory label or marketing description alone does not explain the economic event or provide a complete tax answer.

02 / WORKING CHECKLIST

Build transaction-level evidence

For every receipt or disposal, record the date, asset, units, fee, counterparty where known and valuation source. Keep invoices or contracts when tokens settle business obligations. Preserve wallet transaction identifiers and exchange exports so the accounting entry can be traced back to an underlying event.

Label transfers between your own wallets separately from exchanges with another party. Reconcile changes in quantity, including rewards and fees, rather than assuming all value growth came from price movements. If the same token is used for different purposes, maintain records that distinguish those uses.

03 / WORKING CHECKLIST

Prepare a focused professional review

Write down residence, entity structure and the period covered by the file. Identify transactions whose classification is uncertain and explain why. Ask an adviser to confirm the relevant treatment and filing requirements using current law and the documented facts, rather than asking for a general “Malta crypto tax rate.”

Keep original documents alongside the working ledger and record later corrections. The intended output is a transparent history with unresolved issues clearly identified. Do not invent a valuation or acquisition date to make a report look complete; document the evidence gap and the steps taken to close it.

Sources & scope

Official sources support the jurisdiction context. The working checklists are CryptoGov’s editorial preparation suggestions, not an exhaustive application or filing requirement. Confirm the rules and your circumstances before acting.
