Preparing a German bank file for crypto-related funds

CryptoGov Research Desk · Sources reviewed 1 November 2026

01 / LOCAL CONTEXT

Explain the economic story

German anti-money-laundering rules require risk-based customer diligence, and the framework addresses transfers involving self-hosted crypto addresses. Prepare to explain both the account purpose and the provenance of the assets. The documentation needed depends on the transaction and the institution’s assessment.

Write a chronological account of how the funds were earned, converted, held and sold. Pair each stage with an available document. A large recent sale confirmation explains the cash arriving today but may not explain the original acquisition or the customer’s ownership of the intervening wallet.

02 / WORKING CHECKLIST

Create a traceable payment map

List the bank account, exchange entity and relevant public wallet addresses. Connect incoming and outgoing amounts with dates, fees and transaction identifiers. Where the chain includes a gift, business receipt or inherited asset, retain the supporting agreement and explain how it fits the history.

For a company, separate operating cash from customer funds and state expected volumes, currencies and counterparties. Ask the proposed bank which flows the account can support. Do not conceal exchange settlement or describe customer-money activity as routine office expenditure to simplify onboarding.

03 / WORKING CHECKLIST

Resolve gaps before sending funds

Ask for the bank’s documentation requirements before a substantial transfer where possible. Provide complete explanations through a verified channel and keep an index of the evidence supplied. Record genuine missing documents and your attempts to obtain them rather than fabricating certainty.

The preparation file does not guarantee account opening or immediate payment release. Maintain it as activity changes and reconcile it with your tax ledger. Public addresses and transaction records can support ownership explanations; recovery phrases and private keys should remain confidential and are not appropriate attachments to an application.

Sources & scope

Official sources support the jurisdiction context. The working checklists are CryptoGov’s editorial preparation suggestions, not an exhaustive application or filing requirement. Confirm the rules and your circumstances before acting.
