Start with the account’s purpose
HKMA explains that banks undertake customer due diligence and ongoing monitoring, and that requirements can vary between institutions. Identify whether the account is for personal investment transfers, company operating costs or client funds. Those purposes should not be blended into a single vague description of a crypto business.
Prepare a one-page diagram showing where fiat enters, which entities receive it and why money leaves the account. Distinguish shareholder capital from revenue and customer balances. Include anticipated currencies, volumes and countries. Ask the bank to review the intended use before assuming that a general corporate account supports every flow.
Connect documents to the explanation
Provide identity and ownership documents requested by the institution, plus supporting evidence for the funds involved. Use bank statements, agreements and exchange records to connect the original funding event to the proposed deposit. A transaction hash can show a blockchain movement but does not, by itself, explain its commercial purpose.
If a platform is involved, identify the operator and its actual regulatory status. Keep operating expenditure and any proposed client-money arrangements visible as different use cases. Prepare questions about beneficiary names, reference formats and accepted payment channels so a correct application does not turn into avoidable payment failures later.
Plan for maintenance, not only approval
Ask what changes must be reported after opening: ownership, turnover, customer countries, products or payment counterparties. Save the bank’s responses with the application. Keep a concise evidence trail for unusual inflows so subsequent enquiries can be answered using records rather than hurried explanations assembled from several systems.
Compare institutions on the services they actually agree to provide, their documentation requirements and operational limits. HKMA’s account-opening resource explains the process and avenues for questions. An application pack improves clarity but does not guarantee acceptance, a particular transfer or continued service after the underlying activity changes.
Sources & scope
Official sources support the jurisdiction context. The working checklists are CryptoGov’s editorial preparation suggestions, not an exhaustive application or filing requirement. Confirm the rules and your circumstances before acting.
