US crypto tax records: preserve basis across wallets and platforms

CryptoGov Research Desk · Sources reviewed 1 November 2026

01 / LOCAL CONTEXT

Keep acquisition and disposal evidence together

IRS guidance asks taxpayers to preserve digital-asset transaction records, including information needed to establish basis and dollar fair-market value. Separate investment disposals from receipts for goods or services. A bank withdrawal is not the only event worth recording; an exchange between assets may matter even when no dollars reach a bank.

Create a ledger for each wallet and account that retains dates, quantities, asset identifiers, fees and transaction hashes. Link acquisitions to their supporting records. When transferring your own holdings, preserve the connection between the sending and receiving account so a later sale does not appear to have no acquisition history.

02 / WORKING CHECKLIST

Reconcile reports rather than trusting a total

Keep broker statements alongside your own records and review differences in proceeds, acquisition information and transferred assets. IRS reporting rules phase in broker information over time. A statement can assist preparation without resolving every event, especially where assets moved between providers or an original receipt occurred outside that provider’s system.

Use a documented valuation source and preserve the original files. Keep a list of missing basis, duplicate imports, rewards, swaps and transactions whose classification needs review. Reconcile asset quantities before calculating gains. A software total can look precise while still depending on an incomplete account history or an incorrect transfer label.

03 / WORKING CHECKLIST

Prepare a reviewable return position

Retain the method and evidence supporting the identification of disposed units and the treatment of fees. Ask a qualified adviser which rules apply to the particular year and facts. Do not silently use an assumed method merely because it produces a lower result or is the software’s initial setting.

Provide the reconciled ledger, original reports and exception list together. Include any residence or business changes relevant to federal and state analysis. Keep records after accounts are closed, and protect private keys separately. A tax file needs evidence of transactions and ownership, not access credentials capable of moving the assets.
