Separate disposals from receipts
HMRC says disposals can include selling tokens, exchanging them for another cryptoasset, spending them and certain gifts. Receiving tokens through employment or activities such as staking can raise income questions. Maintain separate categories for acquisition, income, disposal and transfers instead of treating every wallet movement as the same event.
Use the UK tax-year boundary when organising the review, while keeping complete histories across earlier years. A current-year disposal can depend on acquisition records from long before the period under review. Export records before closing an exchange account and preserve the original file even if tax software imports it successfully.
Make sterling values and pooled costs inspectable
For each event, retain the date, asset, quantity, sterling value and valuation source. HMRCβs disposal guidance explains pooling and special matching rules for transactions close together. A platform transaction report is evidence of activity; it is not necessarily a completed calculation of your pooled costs or final tax liability.
Create an exception list for gifts, fees paid in another token, bridges, lost access and receipts with uncertain value. Link each exception to supporting statements and transaction hashes. Reconcile quantities across wallets first, then review the tax treatment. Otherwise missing transfers can distort the figures before the calculation even begins.
Keep an audit trail for each decision
Retain exchange exports, wallet addresses and bank records that connect fiat funding to token movements. Store public evidence needed for review without sharing wallet recovery phrases or private keys. Keep the calculation version and document how uncertain events were resolved so another reviewer can follow the result.
Ask an adviser about the correct treatment of complex DeFi arrangements, residence changes or business activity. Present the reconciled ledger and exception list rather than only a dashboard total. The aim is a defensible calculation in sterling with traceable inputs, not a number that changes whenever software is reconnected.
Sources & scope
Official sources support the jurisdiction context. The working checklists are CryptoGovβs editorial preparation suggestions, not an exhaustive application or filing requirement. Confirm the rules and your circumstances before acting.
