Record the facts behind the tax treatment
Article 10 of Portugal’s personal income-tax code includes a 365-day exclusion for specified crypto disposals, with conditions and definitions. It also addresses crypto consideration and loss of Portuguese tax residence. Do not reduce those provisions to a universal statement that crypto becomes tax-free after one year.
Begin with the asset’s characteristics, acquisition dates, residence history and transaction counterparties where known. Separate private disposals from business receipts and other income. Keep the documents needed to test the applicable conditions rather than retaining only a calculation of days held.
Preserve the chain through swaps
For every exchange, record the asset and units surrendered, the asset and units received, fees and transaction identifiers. Retain the original purchase evidence even when the holdings have moved through several tokens or wallets. A current exchange export may not contain the history needed to analyse a later disposal.
Label transfers between wallets you control so they remain distinguishable from transactions with another party. Record euro valuation sources and time stamps for events needing valuation. When software automatically assigns a fresh acquisition cost after a swap, flag that treatment for review rather than accepting the default uncritically.
Review residence and unusual events
Create an exception list for rewards, token migrations, business payments and periods involving a change of residence. Ask an adviser to identify which provisions apply to those facts. The purpose of the working file is to preserve choices and evidence, not to force every event into one convenient tax category.
Reconcile opening holdings, movements and closing holdings for each asset. Keep original exports separate from your edited spreadsheet and document corrections. A clear record of assumptions makes it easier to revisit the analysis if a missing statement arrives or a professional identifies a classification error.
Sources & scope
Official sources support the jurisdiction context. The working checklists are CryptoGov’s editorial preparation suggestions, not an exhaustive application or filing requirement. Confirm the rules and your circumstances before acting.
