From research to a working plan.
Regulation
The AMF states that France’s transition from its national digital-asset regime to MiCA ended in July 2026. Providers must now hold the appropriate MiCA basis for delivering their services. The AMF supervises French-authorised crypto-asset service providers, while providers authorised elsewhere in the EU may use the applicable cross-border route.
Exchange verification
Use the AMF white lists alongside ESMA’s register. Check the legal entity and services, especially when a website still advertises an older PSAN registration. Keep a copy of the register entry and compare it with the customer agreement. An old registration announcement needs to be reconciled with the provider’s current status.
Tax and record keeping
The French tax administration explains the regime for occasional private digital-asset disposals under Article 150 VH bis. Sales for legal currency and purchases of goods or services can trigger a taxable disposal. Crypto-to-crypto exchanges without a balancing payment have a different treatment. Its calculation uses the wider portfolio’s acquisition cost and value, making complete portfolio records important.
Starting a business
Build the authorisation plan around the services and clients the firm will actually serve. The AMF stresses application completeness and substantive review. A credible file should make operational responsibilities, custody arrangements and customer protection easy to examine. Document which services are delivered by the applicant and which depend on an external provider.
Banking and payments
For account planning, document euro deposit and withdrawal routes, settlement times and the institution holding fiat funds. Ask a prospective bank which source-of-funds records it expects from exchange activity. Reconcile the bank statement with the exchange ledger so transfers, purchases and withdrawals can be explained together.
