DIFC firms now own the Crypto Token suitability assessment

The DFSA’s updated Crypto Token framework took effect on 12 January 2026. Suitability assessment moved to firms providing the relevant financial services, and the DFSA stopped maintaining its list of Recognised Crypto Tokens. The update applies to the DIFC framework, rather than every UAE crypto activity.

Practical impact

A firm needs a reasoned, documented assessment against the applicable criteria for the tokens it uses. A historical recognised-token list is no longer a complete basis for the firm’s current decision. Ongoing monitoring also matters when token characteristics or risks change.

What to check

Record the assessment owner, supporting evidence and review triggers for each relevant token. Connect the decision file to the activity being performed and the firm’s actual permissions, then consult the DFSA’s current rules and supervisory guidance.

How this desk works

Each record separates the source’s publication date, the relevant effective date or milestone, and the date CryptoGov reviewed it. Practical impact and next steps are editorial research prompts. An effective-date label applies to the stated measure, not to every service offered in a jurisdiction.

We link to regulators and other primary authorities. A blank date is left unspecified instead of inferred. Country coverage is selective, and records are not automatically refreshed. Check the current official text and later amendments for the service, customer location and entity involved.
