The current project page changes the reading
Saudi Central Bank’s current mBridge page states that it completed its planned experimentation in mid-2025 and subsequently concluded its participation. It describes a controlled proof of concept with no real-money transactions in SAMA’s own testing. That is more specific than repeating the June 2024 announcement that Saudi Arabia had joined the minimum viable product phase. The page, reviewed on 5 November 2026, does not give us a basis to announce a newly launched retail digital riyal or an investment token available to the public.
Distinguish the Saudi test from the wider platform
The Bank for International Settlements’ 5 June 2024 release described the broader mBridge platform as reaching its minimum viable product stage and supporting real-value transactions subject to jurisdictional preparedness. Those statements need not conflict with SAMA’s account of its narrower experiment. One describes platform capabilities and other participants; the other describes the Saudi test scope. Combining the two into a claim that Saudi retail customers were transacting on a live service would go beyond the evidence. Dates, participants and stages are essential parts of the story.
Wholesale infrastructure solves a different problem
A wholesale digital-currency experiment examines how institutions might settle obligations. A consumer crypto exchange serves a different user, with different access arrangements and risks. Our analysis is that the commercial relevance of payment research lies in its eventual effects on settlement processes, not in whether it can be packaged as a new coin to buy. An infrastructure project can generate useful knowledge even when a particular institution ends its participation.
A business assessing a future payment route should ask who can join, which currencies are supported, what creates final settlement and how exceptions are handled. It should also ask whether the route is a proposal, a test environment or a production service with documented terms. A technically successful demonstration does not answer all of those questions. Nor does shared use of distributed ledger technology make a central-bank experiment equivalent to a permissionless blockchain.
A better way to track Gulf payment projects
Maintain a chronology containing the original announcement, subsequent status updates and the precise scope of each participant. The most recent authoritative page should inform the account of present participation, while earlier releases explain how the project developed. This article offers that distinction rather than forecasting a Saudi launch date or the effect on cryptocurrency prices. It is also a reminder to distrust unsolicited offers claiming to sell access to an official digital-currency experiment. The sources cited here describe institutional research and platform development, not a retail investment opportunity.
